Discover Abelana Game Reserve

Nestled in the heart of South Africa’s Limpopo region, Abelana Game Reserve is a wildlife lover’s paradise. With 10 kilometres of the meandering Selati River, lush vegetation, and a plethora of animal life, Abelana exudes a rare beauty and serenity you won’t find anywhere else. As one of the top safari destinations in Southern Africa, Abelana is home to the Big Five – elephant, rhino, leopard, lion, and buffalo – as well as an array of other wildlife species. From leisurely game drives to river cruises and walking safaris led by experienced guides, visitors can immerse themselves in the wonders of Africa while exploring Abelana’s diverse terrain.

What truly sets Abelana apart is its commitment to providing a unique feeling of exclusivity while on safari. With just two lodges – Abelana Safari Camp in the south and Abelana River Lodge in the north – guests could easily be in the only vehicle exploring the reserve’s vast landscapes at any given time. This low-density approach allows us to offer a completely immersive, authentic safari experience tailored to suit guest preferences.

The Unique Ecosystems of Abelana

Geographically, Abelana Game Reserve boasts a range of ecosystems, from distinctive granite outcrops and koppies in the south to beautiful riparian forests in the north, dominated by large riverine trees. Each area offers unique wildlife sightings and opportunities for exploration. This diverse environment not only enriches the safari experience but also provides habitats for various flora and fauna. As you traverse the reserve, keep your eyes peeled for rare bird species and unique plants that call this beautiful region home.

Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

Abelana Game Reserve is dedicated to sustainable tourism, working closely with the Mashishimale community to uplift and empower its people while conserving the wilderness under its stewardship. Our environmental ethos is to operate with as light a footprint as possible. Abelana Safari Camp uses solar power and gas geysers, and no large trees were removed during its construction. The camp is designed to be completely dismantled and rehabilitated within 12 to 18 months if necessary.

We are staunchly against single-use plastics and have implemented our own reverse osmosis systems to provide fresh drinking water from an underground aquifer. All waste is meticulously separated and removed from the property, ensuring that we maintain the natural beauty of the reserve for future generations to enjoy.

Activities to Enhance Your Experience

At Abelana, we offer a variety of activities to enhance your safari experience, ensuring that each guest leaves with unforgettable memories. Enjoy guided morning and afternoon game drives, where you’ll have the chance to spot the Big Five and more. For those interested in a more intimate connection with nature, our bush walks are led by knowledgeable guides who can share their expertise on the local flora and fauna.

Birding enthusiasts will be thrilled with the extensive variety of bird species found in the reserve, while photography buffs can capture stunning landscapes and wildlife moments. Don’t miss the chance to stargaze under the African night sky, where the lack of light pollution reveals a breathtaking celestial display.

Take a Road Trip to the Lowveld

Getting to Abelana Game Reserve is an adventure in itself. Located in the Lowveld, the reserve is easily accessible from Johannesburg, taking about five hours by road. The journey predominantly follows a long stretch of stellar highway, complemented by the gorgeous, winding scenery of Route 71.

Some of our favourite Route 71 destinations include the delightful Haenertsburg, with its quaint cafés and knick-knack shops, Magoebaskloof Canopy Tours, and the beautiful Magoebaskloof Hiking Trails. Enjoy the magnificent drive around Tzaneen Dam, stop at organic farm stalls, and visit the Qualito Craft Distillery in Phalaborwa for those with a refined taste for adventure.

With half of your trip sailing smoothly along the N1 highway and the other half enjoying cultural stops and mountain passes, the five-hour road trip from Johannesburg passes in the blink of an eye.

Conclusion: Your African Adventure Awaits

Abelana Game Reserve offers a unique and immersive experience that complements visits to the nearby Kruger National Park. With its breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and commitment to sustainable tourism, it stands as a beacon for wildlife enthusiasts and adventurers alike.
