Getting Around

By Sky:  Mozambique has the following international airports in the main cities:.  Maputo (MPM) is 3km from the city; Beira (BEW) 13km from the city; Nampula (APL) is 4km from the city.  Flying is the best and quickest option as the main cities are quite far apart.

By Driving:  You can hire a vehicle in Maputo, Nampula and Beira.  This enables one to explore the beautiful country on one’s own time and decide where you want to go and not feel rushed.  You can always pre-arrange the hire of a vehicle and we can help you book your accommodation and activities.

What to pack

Kindly confirm and check with your airlines for the specific luggage restrictions that are relevant to your flight schedule. Most international airlines have a baggage allowance of 20 kg or more per person.  On commercial airlines, they generally permit two (2) pieces of checked luggage per person. Please note that the carry-on bag must be of such dimensions and weight as set by the airlines, confirming with the airlines is important as it may not be the same at the different airlines.

Currency

The currency of Mozambique is the Mozambican Metical (MZN). Luckily, ATMs are widely available, it’s very important to check with your bank for charges and advice when using international ATMs, as there could be quite steep charges when drawing money. Foreign currencies such as United States Dollars; British Pounds & Euros are sometimes accepted, however, local currency is mostly preferred. It is always advisable to carry a small amount of local currency in cash for buying goods in smaller local shops and for tipping.

Vaccinations

The following vaccinations required or recommended:

• Yellow Fever
• Typhoid
• Hepatitis A & B
• Cholera, among others.
• Please always carry your “International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP)” (or “Yellow Card”) with you.

Malaria:  We advise that always consult a medical practitioner at least six weeks prior to travel. Malaria is present in Mozambique and it is strongly recommended to take malaria prophylactics before, during and after your visit. Consulting your medical professional regarding which prophylactics will be suitable for you is advisable.

Yellow Fever:  Mozambique has no risk of getting Yellow Fever,  however, being vaccinated from Yellow Fever is required for travellers who are arriving from, or have transited through, countries with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission (e.g. Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda or elsewhere worldwide).  We recommend carrying a Yellow Fever card with you at all times, as this requirement can change.

Travel Tips

Those wishing to travel to Mozambique should have a valid passport for at least 6 months after their departure date from the country, with 2 clear pages for stamping. For the best visa advice, please contact your local Mozambican Embassy to find out what the latest requirements are. Visas are currently required by everyone except citizens of South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Swaziland. If you are planning on taking heaps of photographs or are a keen photographer, it is a good idea to pack extra batteries and memory cards for your camera, as these are expensive and difficult to come across locally in Mozambique.  Mozambique is home to several of the best dive sites in the Indian Ocean and the marine life is exceptional. Some highlights include year-round diving with manta rays and whale sharks, masses of which peak from October to April.
