If you’re searching for the best African countries to visit, Botswana should certainly be on your list. Known for its stunning landscapes and rich wildlife, Botswana offers travellers an experience like no other. One such gem is Feline Fields Lodge, situated in the vast and breath-taking Kalahari Desert. This destination is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in authentic African culture while enjoying the luxurious comforts of a well-appointed lodge. Whether you’re an adventurer or a nature lover, Botswana is an unmissable stop on any African itinerary.

The Wonders of Botswana’s Kalahari Desert

Botswana’s Kalahari Desert is a unique landscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. It’s an ancient land, steeped in history and culture, particularly that of the San Bushmen, Africa’s First People. Feline Fields Lodge, located in the northern Kalahari, offers an unrivalled experience of this vast wilderness. Guests can engage in activities like desert biking, guided walks, and game drives. But what truly sets it apart is the opportunity to connect with local San communities. Guests can join in fireside storytelling, visit nearby villages, and witness trance dances, providing a rare insight into the ancient culture of the San.

The Kalahari’s wildlife is just as fascinating as its cultural heritage. Despite being a semi-arid desert, the region teems with life. From the elusive black-maned Kalahari lions to herds of gemsbok and springbok, the diversity of fauna in this rugged landscape is astounding. If you’re looking for a destination that combines adventure with cultural richness, Botswana is undoubtedly one of the best African countries to visit.

Explore the Okavango Delta

Botswana’s Okavango Delta is another must-see destination for anyone exploring Africa. Known for its lush, water-filled channels and islands, the Delta is a sharp contrast to the dry Kalahari. Feline Fields Vintage Camp, situated on the banks of the Khwai River, offers a more traditional safari experience in this beautiful region. Visitors can enjoy guided boat trips through the delta’s waterways, spotting wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles, and a myriad of bird species.

The delta is famous for its incredible animal sightings. Elephants, buffalo, and leopards are frequently seen along the riverbanks, making this one of the best African countries to visit for safari enthusiasts. Feline Fields Vintage Camp allows guests to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the delta, with tented accommodation that echoes the era of Africa’s great explorers.

From cooling off in the expansive 25m lap pool to evenings around the fire in conversation with the San Bushmen, Feline Fields Lodge is blessed with an array of wonderful facilities and fabulous spaces that combine to create a truly special safari destination.

Swimming pool
Our 25m lap pool allows for swimming as well as cooling off. It’s a great way to exercise and beat the heat. You don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer to enjoy doing lengths, so feel free to take as much time as you need to get your cardio session sorted!

Lounge, Library & Bar
Sit back, relax and enjoy the expansive views out over the Kalahari… Select a book from our lovely library and do a little reading… Indulge in our lovingly curated selection of spirits or sample a refreshing, contemporary cocktail… Sample an aperitif around the outdoor fireplace, choosing from a delightful world wine list and a selection of spirits and liqueurs.

Our lounge, library and bar have been designed to encourage you to do as little or as much as you want and combined with superlative personal service and our legendary “can do” attitude, we offer you the opportunity to create your own, special Feline Fields moments with us.

We’ve gone the extra mile to make sure our spaces offer sumptuous comfort while maximising the opportunities to make the most of the breathtaking landscapes around us.

Game drives
We offer morning and afternoon/evening drives in the Kalahari allowing you to explore the impressive landscapes and unique environments that make this desert region so special. While not a prime game viewing area, you may nonetheless see elephants and other desert-adapted species like gemsbok, as well as amazing birdlife including ostriches and secretary birds.

Walking
Join the San Bushmen for a guided walk through the Kalahari, learning about their traditional way of life and the plants and animals that sustain them. You will find out about the medicinal qualities of the endemic flora and how to find water and store it, keeping it fresh for weeks, as well as how to make fire and find food.

Horse riding
The Kalahari is perfect for horse riding, with its vast, largely flat landscape making it exciting to explore from the saddle. Enjoy guided trails through this unique environment and stop for a bush breakfast or lunch along the way. Most riding takes place in the early morning to avoid the heat of the day.

Meet the San
Visit our local village and learn more about the San Bushmen and their community, discovering how they live in close harmony with nature, respecting its power and giving thanks for the food and shelter it provides. You can also witness a bona-fide trance dance during which the San contact the spirits of their ancestors and become one with the wilderness around them.

Sleepout
Experience the magic of a billion-star sleepout in the Kalahari, beneath the vaulted African night sky and the shimmering Milky Way. We set up the perfect fly camp not too far from the lodge where you will sleep in comfort on beautiful beds in luxurious mosquito net tents, allowing you to completely immerse yourself in the magic of wild Africa.

Wellness
Enjoy massages and rituals that connect you with the Kalahari and its energies in our wellness sanctuary, leaving you refreshed and rejuvenated. We use Africology essential oils, all made ethically and sustainably from African plants that have been growing in our lands for thousands of years.

Sand bikes
Each of our suites has its own sand bikes for your use during your stay. Feel free to cycle at will in and around the lodge or go out into the Kalahari with one of our guides and explore further afield.

Tennis
Feline Fields Lodge has its own tennis court giving guests the opportunity to play a set or two in the magical environment of the Kalahari! Best played in the cool morning hours or late afternoons with sundowners on tap, this is a great way to have some fun during your stay! Racquets and balls are provided.
