Handcrafted over 50 years ago as a traditional wooden sailing boat, Tusitiri Dhow has been lovingly restored into a luxurious private charter, offering unforgettable dhow safaris through the Lamu archipelago. Ideal for families or small groups, Tusitiri Dhow provides a unique opportunity to explore Kenya’s coastal heritage from the comfort of an elegant vessel. These carefully curated journeys are designed for travellers seeking authentic and intimate experiences on their trips to Africa, far from the bustle of modern resorts. Whether on a multi-night safari or a day cruise, guests aboard Tusitiri are immersed in marine beauty, history, and personalised service

A Historic Setting with Timeless Beauty

Tusitiri is anchored in the Lamu archipelago, a part of the Kenyan coast renowned for its cultural richness and untouched natural splendour. Lamu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the oldest continually inhabited settlement in East Africa. The dhow sails between islands fringed with white beaches, mangrove forests, and turquoise waters teeming with marine life. The sailing experience is slow and graceful, offering the perfect pace to absorb the history and tranquil charm of the surroundings. This makes it a distinctive option among trips to Africa for those wanting to combine heritage with natural beauty.

Elegant Simplicity on Board

Life aboard Tusitiri centres on the wide wooden deck, where guests gather under the sun or stars. During the day, cushioned lounge areas provide spaces to recline, socialise, or simply take in the sweeping ocean views. Mealtimes are a memorable affair, with fresh seafood and locally sourced produce prepared in an open-air kitchen and served al fresco in a shaded dining space. As night falls, the space transforms into a lantern-lit retreat. The deck becomes a starlit bedroom, with luxurious bedrolls and white linen arranged for a restful night under the open sky.

Authentic Activities in a Private Setting

Tusitiri Dhow offers a range of included activities for guests of all ages. These range from snorkelling coral reefs to paddleboarding in quiet mangrove creeks. Guests can also enjoy deep-sea and creek fishing, water-skiing, and wakeboarding, or take gentle walks and picnics on secluded beaches. Sunset drinks on remote sand dunes and cultural excursions through the streets of Lamu and Shela are also part of the experience. Each element is tailored to create a relaxed, enriching alternative for those planning bespoke trips to Africa that go beyond the traditional safari.

A Unique Option for Family Travel

Tusitiri Dhow was designed with flexibility in mind, making it a top choice for family travel. With exclusive-use charters for up to ten overnight guests and day trips for up to twenty-five, it offers complete privacy and customisation. Whether celebrating a milestone or simply gathering with loved ones, families can enjoy the comfort and exclusivity of having the vessel to themselves. The combination of safe waters, gentle activities, and immersive cultural experiences make Tusitiri a standout option for those considering family-friendly trips to Africa.

Rooms

Life on-board is relaxed and centered on Tusitiri’s broad deck. Sumptuous cushioned seating areas are set up on both sides of the deck by day, and at night, brass lanterns light up the deck and comfortable white linen bedrolls are set up and the day cushions are removed. On Tusitiri, all the beds are star-beds!

**All guests sleep in luxury bedrolls (mattresses and white linen, duvets and pillows) on Tusitiri’s wide deck, under the stars. These can be arranged as double or single beds. The large day cushions are arranged around the bedrolls to act as a partition and provide some privacy.
