• Foreign visitors to South Africa may claim back the value added VAT paid on items which they take out of the country.
• The request for a refund, together with the relevant documentation, must be received by the VRA within 90 days of date of export.
• The goods must exceed R250 in order to be considered for a VAT refund.
• The claim can be done at any of the 43 designated ports, including OR Tambo Airport, King Shaka International Airport and Cape
Town International Airport.
• The standard payment method for VAT refunds is via transfer into your bank account.
• Refunds are loaded once approved by the South African Revenue Service, which takes at least 90 days.
